Very interesting piece. A 2-day set with a single handle.
There is probably a reason these are rare. If you are at all clumsy or one of the pivot pins is loose - could be a bloody mess.
I have seen a lot of them on the bay. Always wanted one but they are out of my price range. Cool item.
Really?
I have a hard time believing this is real and not put together. But what do i know. Its different for sure. So why not i guess.
Just had my wtf moment for the day. Interesting but I see no earthly reason for their existence.
Bob
Well that's a new one on me. I'm trying to imagine using one. Seems a little cumbersome to me. Must be a challenge to strop.
A good exercise for a pair of common old Rodgers with 1 broken scale?
I have seen lots of the old 2-bladers with the soldier sometimes on them. Said to have been made by French prisoners or something.
Papillon razors? Never anything such as this.
Looks like someone just removed a scale and pinned.
Look how the blades are resting next to the outer of the scales.. And why have two wedges.
Fake..
Unless I'm wrong,, in which case I apologise ;)
A 2 bladed razor?

;) Mostly joking, but I do think it would be cumbersome to shave with.
Speaking of unusual ones, there is a razor that's been on Ebay for around a month or so with a roller mechanism attached at the spine.
Looks interesting, but then I thought about actually shaving with it, honing it, etc. Not sure how it would work.
Looking at the pics, it is pinned collarless and looks to have been done long ago.
However, the top and bottom peens are rough. Not even and polished like Rodgers would have done them.
That just looks awkward to use. I gotta think the flip when stropping would be less than smooth.
There is example of this kind of razors in Renzo Jardella's book "Straight Razors: 900 Years of Razor and Case Excellence"
There is even example of four-bladed papillon like this one. Really interesting item.
Saddly expensive, yet.. :-(
So, I was bidding on a Greaves faux frameback earlier today and decided to look through the seller's other items. Sure enough, this double razor was being sold by the same seller as the Greaves I was bidding on.
I didn't get the Greaves.
I'm guessing one of you guys got it.
:p
I posted it just as a curiosity. As others have noted, I'm certain it would be awkward in actual use, so I have no interest in it-might as well try to shave with a Swiss Army Knife. I didn't bid on the Greaves either-lately I'm doing more selling than buying. I've made this deal with my wife that if I can get my PayPal balance up around a thousand, my hobby/obsession can become self-sustaining. I can buy the blades/parts/tool and materials I need from it, and just make and sell razors as needed. It's a theory-we'll see.
Thanks, Tom-Like I said, we'll see. I honestly don't have time and can't afford anymore expensive hobbies, so I'm just trying to get better at the ones I already have lol!
I really dont know if these are real. We all have a lot of loose blades that we could put into a stack. Honestly, I could make a super rare Wade and Butcher/Reynolds collaboration razor if I wanted to cob such a beast together.
Yup, never seen something like that except in Jardella's book, and none so nice anyway.
There have been several attempts to put more than one blade on a razor, rarely four of them, granted, but two, yeah, there are some cases.
So like stated earlier, there are the "papillon" / butterfly razors.

Like Sharptonn said, they were said to be made by French prisonners. Anyway, they are 999 times out of 1000 very crude. Even when they try to look semi precious like the one on the right. Only a pair of scales, none in the middle, with a big pin, and a pining job bending the scales sufficiently enough for both blades to rest in place side by side.
Another exemple of double bladed razor, and probably the most functionnal would be Altus' "Turistkniff", where the razor looks more or less like a balisong.
But anyway, none of these work idealy.
One of my first razors was the one on the left. It was quite a handful, heavy and clunky. Funny experience, but I soon stopped using it.
I suppose the design presented in the auction did not work too much either because, well, it presents no real added value compared to having a set in a box.
Capitalist darwinism and so forth.
There are stories regarding the Papillons, explaining why there would be two blades, and the popularity of the design. They would be sailors' razors (and therefore quite often adorn a scrimshaw, and the two blades would be either :
- because on a rolling boat, you have to have a shaving partner and two partners would share a razor
- because being for a long time at sea, they would not lend often enough to have a blade honed frequently enough.
That's the stories I've read, they might be bull, but well, there you go.
